Barrier-free accessibility

With the completion of the extensive refurbishment and renovation work, Berlin Cathedral will be fully accessible from 2026. This means that people with reduced mobility can now enjoy a barrier-free tour of the main sanctuary, the baptistery and wedding chapel, the Hohenzollern crypt, the Cathedral Shop, the Cathedral Café and the Cathedral Museum.

On the north side of the cathedral, a new, self-service lift is available for this purpose, connecting street level with the level of the cathedral arcades. From the cathedral arcades, all visitors can now enter the cathedral equally via the large portals. Inside the building itself, a lift has been installed alongside the visitors’ staircase in the south tower, enabling a barrier-free tour within the building from the crypt to the Cathedral Museum.

In addition, the toilet facilities in the basement of Berlin Cathedral have been enlarged and made barrier-free, as have the Cathedral Shop and the Cathedral Café. Both areas now offer more space and invite visitors to linger after their tour.

The accessibility improvements and renovation of the Hohenzollern Crypt were funded as part of the joint programme “Improvement of Regional Infrastructure” (GRW) with federal and state funds, as well as with funds from the Berlin Cathedral Parish.

Please note: For structural reasons, the dome and the two event rooms, the Jablonski Room and the Schleiermacher Room, are not accessible to visitors with reduced mobility.
