Mozart meets the Universe!

In the 17th and 18th centuries, musical improvisations and fantasias were often the real highlight of a concert. Mozart, in particular, stirred the "emotions" of his audience with his improvisations, which could last up to half an hour. Winfried Bönig, organist at Cologne Cathedral, performs one of only two of Mozart’s fantasias ever to have been recorded. 

Gustav Holst’s orchestral suite ‘"he Planets" also promises to evoke powerful emotions. Composed between 1914 and 1916, it is regarded as one of Holst’s best-known works and had a profound influence on 20th-century film music. In Winfried Bönig’s concert, we encounter Mars, Venus and Uranus.

Winfried Bönig was appointed cathedral organist in Cologne in 2001 and, as Professor of Artistic Organ Performance and Improvisation, has headed the "Catholic Church Music" degree programme at the Cologne University of Music and Dance since 1998. Concert invitations take him all over the world year after year. He also regularly conducts. Several contemporary composers have dedicated works to Bönig, which he has premiered, including Enjott Schneider, Jean Guillou, Naji Hakim and others. Among Bönig’s numerous CD recordings as an organist and conductor, those recorded on the Cologne Cathedral organs, as well as his own organ arrangement of the Goldberg Variations, have attracted particular attention.
