Himmels-Clavier!

The programme begins and ends with Bach. It opens with his magnificent Fantasy in G minor. It is structured like a classical speech (Propositio / Confutatio / Confirmatio / Confutatio / Confirmatio). The concert concludes with Bach’s ‘Farewell Music’, the chorale ‘Vor deinen Thron tret’ ich hiermit’, which he dictated whilst on his deathbed. The centrepiece of the concert programme is Liszt’s ‘Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen’. This work – a veritable ‘mourning piece’ – was composed in response to the deaths of his son Daniel and his daughter Blandine. 

Whilst still a student, Sebastian Küchler-Blessing was appointed to the Cathedral of the Ruhr Diocese as Germany’s youngest cathedral organist at the time. As a musician in both liturgical and concert settings, an improviser, a passionate chamber musician and an arranger, he ranks among the most versatile practitioners of his instrument. Küchler-Blessing is a Bach Prize winner at the Leipzig Bach Competition, having also won the Mendelssohn Prize and first prize at the International Organ Week in Nuremberg. He teaches organ and liturgical organ playing/improvisation at the Robert Schumann University of Music in Düsseldorf and has taught at the universities in Freiburg as well as, as a visiting lecturer, in St Petersburg and Leipzig. Küchler-Blessing is an organ expert. Masterclasses and serving on the jury at international competitions round off his professional activities.
