Bread and wine conversations recommence

Following the ‘winter break’, the bread and wine conversations are due to start again on 14 March. We once again invited interesting guests including the essayist and author Daniel Schreiber, who last year grappled with the question of how we can find a way out of the placelessness that afflicts modern life, as part of his widely read book “Zuhause” (“Home”). On 18 April he will read excerpts from his book that shed light on his personal journey of discovery, which he will be discussing with us.

In addition to this personal approach to a topic that is having an increasingly profound effect on people, we will also return to the question of what role the Christian faith can and should play in our society – and which role it should not? The Cultural Representative for Art and Culture at the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD), Dr. Hinrich Claussen, will also be discussing the Cross and a pluralistic society on 23 May. Current discussions concerning the Cross on Berlin City Palace are the main reason. The question as to what it means for Christians to live in a secular environment will be addressed by Pastor Kathrin Oxen, Head of the Centre for Protestant Sermon Culture (‘Das Zentrum für evangelische Predigtkultur’) under the event headline of “Alone among heathens?” on 20 June.

We will, however, be starting on 14 March with an updated ecumenical topic, namely the current discussion concerning the sixth supplication of the Lord's Prayer. At the end of 2017, Pope Francis criticised the translation of the supplication in the Lord’s Prayer: And lead us not into temptation’. This translation is deemed poor given that it obscures the image of God. In reality, Satan would tempt people. It is noteworthy that statements by the Pope on special topics of faith also met with great resonance in what is a rather insular public audience. In addition to an introduction to the topic by Cathedral Dean Thomas C. Müller, the discussion concerning fundamental questions and considerations should also be continued: What actually is temptation? What concept of man and God is hidden behind this word? Is talk of ‘temptation’ actually appropriate these days?
