Holy Week and Easter 2025
Holy Week and Easter are a special time - the highest holidays of the Christian church. Anyone who experiences these days in Berlin Cathedral will feel the unique atmosphere that unfolds in the preaching church from Maundy Thursday to Easter Monday. With devotions and services, outstanding musical accents and a procession, a path is taken that leads from the dawning night through the silence of the Holy Sepulchre to the joy of Easter. From deepest darkness to light.
Some highlights: In the service at 8 p.m. on Maundy Thursday, Holy Communion is celebrated for the last time before the altar is covered and the light is carried out of the church. On Good Friday, the altar remains covered in black and the Schola of the cathedral choir sings at the 10 a.m. service, while the organ remains silent. Afterwards, the cathedral congregation accompanies the Good Friday procession, during which the cross is carried through Berlin-Mitte in ecumenical fellowship. At 3 pm, excerpts from Georg Philipp Telemann's legendary setting of the “Brockes Passion” with the lautten compagney Berlin and the Staats- und Domchor Berlin will be played at the hour of Jesus' death, and at 5 pm, cathedral organist Andreas Sieling will give his Good Friday concert with works by Bach and Vierne. On Holy Saturday, the Easter Vigil service begins at 10 pm in the dark church, which is gradually filled with candlelight. The light of the resurrection shines in the festive service on Easter Sunday at 10 a.m., and on the morning of Easter Monday there is a large festive service with Bishop Christian Stäblein.
