Musical highlights and church services during Advent 2024
Next Sunday is the first day of Advent, but the Advent season begins the evening before: in Berlin Cathedral it is characterized by a unique musical and festive program. It is aimed at all Berliners, guests to the city, adults, children and young people - in short: people who love to experience great music and those who would like to sing along themselves. The program opens on Saturday, 30 November with the “Hour of Cathedral Music”.
The Berlin Cathedral Choir has come up with something very special this year: for the first time, in addition to the three classical performances of Bach's Christmas Oratorio on the afternoon of the third Sunday in Advent, it is also presenting a family concert with a child-friendly and humorous narrative aimed specifically at young listeners. This family performance is followed by a sing-along concert in the evening, in which visitors take part as a choir: Excerpts from cantatas 1-3 will be performed, with no pre-rehearsal, the only requirements are that you enjoy singing and bring your own sheet music - and: Only listening is allowed!
In addition, pre-Christmas classics can be heard with the English Choir, Swedish and German Christmas carols fill the Berlin Cathedral, cathedral organist Andreas Sieling invites you to the hour of cathedral music and his Advent concert, the German Gents present their a cappella Christmas concert, the Flying Steps whirl through the Predigtkirche, Till Brönner gives a “Silent Night” and last but not least, the concerts of the Staats- und Domchor Berlin are absolute highlights in the Advent season: “Ding! Dong! Merrily on high!”
