Imperial Staircase

Kaiserliches Treppenhaus Through the Imperial Staircase, the royal couple had access to the Baptismal and Matrimonial Chapel and to the imperial gallery in the Sermon Church. An American company also built an elevator on this location.

The decoration of the staircase is quite magnificent. In addition to variously colored marble, a red material (unica) from the Lahn region was used to create a splendidly colorful effect. The plaster capitals of the columns are coated with copper. The gilded bronze candelabra and ceiling decorations, together with the gold-colored glazing of the doors and skylight complete the decorative scheme.

On the upper floor, 13 tempera paintings by Albert Hertel ornament the walls and ceiling; they illustrate stories from the life of Christ and parables of Jesus.
